Honey the “Water Tower Dog”
![]()
Honey was found standing guard at a water tower on a cold winter day here in Topeka. She had been there a couple of days and would not let anyone near her. People that worked in an office nearby had been feeding her and attempting to catch her but to no avail.
She was very thin, missing hair and had recently given birth. She guarded that tower with a vengeance, keeping close watch on the road as if she was looking for someone to come back and get her.
A nice officer from Shawnee County Animal Control spent several hours one Saturday afternoon attempting to capture her and finally did.
She was brought into Helping Hands Humane Society very scared and showing her “tough” demeanor. Shelter workers gave her the space she needed and in a short while they were able to get close to her. Soon afterwards a volunteer went into her cage, sat on the floor and Honey immediately went to her and laid her entire body in her lap. The change that soon followed was amazing. This dog was so loving and had eyes that would melt your heart.
It didn’t take long at all for Honey to capture the heart of a young man that came into HHHS looking for a lifetime companion. He said it was in her eyes, and he knew her hair would grow back and that he would have her up to a normal weight in no time. He adopted her that very day and she has lived a life of luxury ever since. We are pleased to say she is a very happy and spoiled dog to this day!
