Jasmine

Date adopted: 5/2/02

I had just moved to Topeka and into a tiny apartment. My silver, three-year old breeder-bought mini schnauzer, who had always been amongst other dogs, joined me from my parents’ home. Hours at my new job were long and I recognized Molly was slipping into depression from loneliness. I felt I had two options: puppy Prozac or add another dog. My preference was to stay with the same breed, but I couldn’t afford to buy one. So, I found my way to Helping Hands.

It was my first visit and I’d only intended to take a tour. I pulled into the parking lot, got out of my car, and looked up to see the most darling, little black schnauzer. Once inside, I expressed immediate interest in her. The caring staff had to regrettably inform me that eight-month old Jasmine was already reserved for adoption by another lady who was only waiting for her husband to stop by the shelter and take a look before finalizing.

A bit deflated, I browsed the corridors and even took a happy, little poodle-mix into the “get acquainted” room. I went home planning to return with Molly to see how she interacted with the poodle-mix before signing the adoption paperwork.

Then came the fateful telephone call…the couple had decided not to take Jasmine! I couldn’t believe such an irresistible cutie was now available! In a flash, I snatched up Molly from home and flew back to Helping Hands. Molly and Jasmine were introduced in the parking lot and did fine. I wanted her so bad that my muscles were cramping. When the staff member came back with the adoption approval, it was like winning the lottery! My first, precious pound puppy.

Since that day, “the girls” have been inseparable and my life enriched forever. She is brilliant, vibrant, affectionate, vigilant, and….mommy’s princess. For all you do and have done, I am forever grateful.

Sincerely,
Jessie Polk W.
