Patches

This is Patches. We adopted him from Helping Hands Humane Society in Topeka, Kansas. We fell in love with Patches at first sight. He has such a huge heart and a warm smile - it is contagious.

The Helping Hands crew took Patches under their protective and knowing wing until fate brought him and his new family together. Patches is beautiful, two and half year old “Crested Irish Setter.” He has special needs due to a genetic condition that causes alopecia (baldness). He cannot be out in the sun and must be protected from all but the most neutral temperatures. He is a little frail right now and needs to gain some weight - but we do not think that will take too long. He has a vivacious appetite.

Our family adopted Patches on Wednesday, July 2, 2005. He joins two parents, five teenagers and two other dogs in his new Lawrence home. Some days Patches has more challenges to overcome than most people do in a month - and he always comes out triumphant and smiling. He has truly touched our hearts and given us reason to think more often about others in need and not just about ourselves.

Patches is a ball-catching expert; he is fast, and despite his weakened condition right now, he triumphs in all chase and tug games with our other pets (and husband). We are so thankful that Helping Hands took the extra time and effort to uncover the gold lining in this frail and hair-challenged dog. Due to their expertise, they knew exactly how to bring out the best in this pet and make him an adoption dream come true. Patches was given unconditional love and medical support, even at the expense of some of the crew’s own personal funds, and the marketing necessary to survive the hard licks and find a happy home. It is our desire now to make sure that Patches never has to suffer in climate, weather, hunger, loneliness or ridicule. He is a beautiful, prancing prince and wins the Irish Setter beauty contest every day at our house.
