Sasha

Sasha, a beautiful three-year-old Samoyed, was brought into Helping Hands by her owners in September 1997 because they couldn’t afford to keep her. To everyone’s amazement, a month later she still had not been adopted. John and I decided to have her spayed to help her find a new home. I took her to the veterinarian for her surgery on a Friday so she could recuperate at home before going back to the shelter. During her weekend visit she was so quiet and well-behaved that John said, “This dog is no trouble at all, so we should adopt her.” None of the staff were surprised when we adopted her Monday morning. After she became more comfortable at home, we lovingly nicknamed her “Sasha the She Devil” because she loves to eat paper products, plastic, pot holders and dish towels, among other things. We have always had a fear that we would have to rush her to the veterinarian in the middle of the night because of her strange “tastes”, but she must have a cast-iron stomach. Other than her propensity for eating things she shouldn’t, she has been a wonderful dog. She is very loving and loves to be close and enjoys the time I spend brushing her (which is good because she is definitely a hair factory) and she derives such pleasure from playing with her toys. When Helping Hands produced a millennium calendar for 2000, Sasha was chosen by celebrity judges to be in the calendar and was featured during December because Samoyeds are known as Christmas dogs. Sasha will soon be eleven years old, and we have just discovered that she has cancer, so we don’t know how much longer we will have this beautiful, loving dog. It is very difficult to imagine her not being a part of our family, but we will enjoy and cherish every day we are fortunate to have with Sasha.
