Toby

Just a note to let you know that Toby, AKA Harley, is doing great. He is learning commands well and is adjusting to farm life quickly. His first encounter with chickens was quite a site and I wish I had a video of that; I laughed for hours. He really didn't know what to think about those birds nor did he realize that they would make such a fuss about his presence. He was a perfect gentleman though; he did nothing more than sniff and ran back to us when they squawked at him.

Toby's next encounter on the farm was with a three-month-old calf named Bo that I have been bottle-feeding since birth. The calf and dog would cautiously approach until they touched noses and then immediately run away from each other as if they had touched an electric wire, and then came back to do it again. I believe Toby thinks Bo is another dog of some sort because he now thinks he should play and run, which Bo is glad to do. It's all play to both. Toby does not however try this with the older cows; I think he knows the limit. He only goes out there with me and has not yet approached the fence without John or I. My daughter, Carol, is 17 and has fallen deeply in love with Toby. Every chance she gets, she spends a great deal of time with him. And if she can get away with it she will get him to sleep with her. She is going away to college in the fall so she had me take some Senior pictures with him so she would have some to take with her. I'm not sure who she will miss more - the dogs or us.

Lucy is adjusting to sharing everything, including us, with Toby; but she still has certain places that are just her's and she does not hesitate to let him know to stay away. They now play together and sleep on the same mat but Lucy has her side and Toby has his and they seem to know whose side is whose. When Lucy is on Toby's side he will pace around and whine until she moves and then lay down just like a kid who can't find his favorite blankie - funniest thing you ever saw.

We thank you for your kindness and care of Toby. He has been a great addition to our family and we believe he really enjoys all the room he has to run and play. Were glad your there!
