Animals
Are Not Gifts
Thinking
about adopting a new puppy for Christmas? Animal shelter professionals
feel that the hectic holiday season is not the best time to add a pet
to your household.
Cautiously
consider how stressful this time of the year can be. Taking on an added
responsibility in the midst of all the hustle and bustle could be more
than you bargained for. Many animal shelters suspend adoptions prior
to Christmas to prevent impulse buying.
Animals
are never appropriate gifts. Even if you know someone who is looking
for a pet, please do not give one as a gift. Sadly, many animals are
simply discarded to shelters after the holidays, when the novelty has
worn off.
Owning
a pet is a long-term commitment that requires money for food, toys and
veterinary care. Decisions should be made with careful planning and
research. The person who will care for the animal is the only one who
should make that decision.
Consider
offering an adoption gift certificate or wrapping up pet supplies to
put under the tree. This way, the person can take the time to carefully
choose an animal after the disruptive holidays have passed.
