Disaster
Preparedness for Pets
It
is a good idea to have a disaster plan for your pets in case of an emergency.
Red
Cross disaster shelters cannot accept pets because of health and safety
regulations. Service animals are the only exception.
Determine
where your pet will go in case of a disaster. Consider contacting hotels
and motels outside your area to see if they accept pets. Ask if they
would waive a “no pet” policy in an emergency. Ask friends
or relatives if they could keep your animals if necessary. Make a list
of boarding facilities and veterinarians that could shelter your pets.
Prepare
a pet disaster supply kit that includes food, water, portable bowls,
leashes, medications etc. A crate or pet taxi will come in handy for
temporary confinement. It is a good idea to include current photos of
your pets should they become lost. You can post or bring your photos
to the shelter.
When
disaster strikes, bring pets inside. Make sure each pet is wearing a
secure collar with current ID tags. Confirm your emergency arrangements
if you need to evacuate. Remember that animals react differently under
stress. Being prepared could save their lives.
