Pets
As Easter Gifts
At
Easter many people plan to buy holiday gifts for their loved ones. Some
of these gifts may include baby ducks, rabbits or chicks.
Most
of the animals bought for holiday gifts are impulse purchases. This
is usually a terrible mistake, because people do not fully consider
the responsibility and commitment that comes along with owning a pet.
There
are several things to consider before buying a pet, such as the supplies
and feed needed, where and how to house the animal, which pet to buy,
the purpose of the pet and the life expectancy of the animal.
The
life expectancy of ducks, rabbits or chicks is usually at least 10 years
if the pet is properly cared for.
“It
is best to discuss your plans before buying a pet. Make sure the individual
knows all the requirements of the pet and the changes it will go through
in its lifetime. If the person does want a pet, it is best to purchase
it together so the person gets the pet he or she wants,” says
William Fortney, Assistant Professor of Diagnostic Medicine Pathobiology.
