Pets
Need Independence from Fireworks
Holidays
involving fireworks bring in the highest numbers of injured and lost
animals to the Humane Society. Helping Hands reminds pet owners to keep
ID tags current in case a pet becomes lost.
To
avoid injury to your pets, supervise all the fireworks near your animals
and your home. It is best to place your pets in a secure area like your
basement, screened porch or garage with proper ventilation. Avoid leaving
your dog unattended in the yard. If your pet is normally skittish, ask
your veterinarian for an anti-anxiety sedative to get through the holiday.
Here
are some suggested activities and tips to help keep your pet calm:
Exercise
your dog in the late morning of July 4 to help it sleep through the
fireworks.
Walk
your dog and let it relieve itself a few hours before the fireworks
start.
Shut
windows, close blinds and draw curtains.
Turn
on a TV or radio to muffle outside noises.
Distract
your dog with a favorite chew toy.
