HHHS Is Launching A Checklist Of Protocols To Ensure Health And Safety For Community Members—Human And Companion Animal Alike
TOPEKA, KANSAS – Helping Hands Humane Society is following protocols for every area of the shelter to help keep animals and people safe during the COVID-19 outbreak in the US. Beginning Thursday, March 19th, the front adoption area of the building will be closed to the general public. Opportunities to view and adopt animals will be scheduled by appointment only. Please call 785-233-7325 to make an appointment. If members of the public would like to purchase something from our gift shop (we know many people regularly purchase their pet food here), they can call us at 785-233-7325 during normal operating hours (Mon-Sat 11:30am-6pm, Sun 1-5pm) to be let into the building. This step will help limit the number of people in the building at one time.
“The health and safety of our pets and the community is our top priority. According to the World Health Organization, there is ‘no evidence that companion animals have been infected or could spread coronavirus (COVID-19).’ Our fear at this time is that as an open admission shelter, if we did have to close our doors and were not allowed to adopt out animals, we would not be able to stop taking animals in, which would create a bottleneck. We cannot keep from taking in animals who need us, and there are still many wonderful animals who need loving homes,” says Kathy Maxwell, Executive Director.
HHHS is taking precautions to ensure we will always have staff available to provide basic care to our animals and is preparing for potential increased intake due to COVID-19. The public can help by continuing to adopt if the time is right for your family, making monetary donations, donating cat litter and cleaning supplies, checking our Facebook page, and having an emergency plan in place for your pets so a family or friend could care for them rather than the animal needing to come to HHHS. Please also make sure your pet’s tags and microchip information are up to date; this will help them get back to you more quickly if they get lost and could potentially avoid them entering the shelter. Donations can be dropped outside our front doors or brought to the east Admissions entrance. You can also donate online or have items shipped directly to our shelter at 5720 SW 21st St, Topeka, KS 66604.
