01. General Wish List Items
Our greatest wish is to find a home for every animal at the shelter. Until we can accomplish that, we have a need for lots of items that can help us provide for them! There are plenty of things that you might have around the house that we can put to use to help care for animals and lots of great ideas for if you want to do a donation drive! Click below to access our wish list or browse this site for more specific ideas!

02. Frequently Asked Questions
We thank you so much for all of your donations and anytime you consider the shelter to give to. We want to help make your giving decisions as easy as possible, so we’ve outlined some of the most common questions we get below and hope this helps save you some drive time and phone time.
Can you come pick up donation items?
In general, no. Unfotunately, we don’t have the resources to be able to come pick up donation items. There are a few exceptions of large scale items that we do need and use (steel bank kennels, store close-outs, large donation drive items). To schedule this or see if arrangements can be made, please contact us at 785-233-7325. Ask for Grace or Margaret.
Where do I bring my donation items?
You can bring your donations to our location at 5720 SW 21st, on 21st and Belle! Our doors are open M-Sat 11:30am-6pm and 1-5pm on Sundays, and we have donate bins in the front breezeway, front lobby, and intake. If you are coming before the doors are open, you are welcome to leave donations outside our doors and we periodically check. Ideally, to ensure the donation’s safe and undamaged arrival, we do prefer if you come during our open hours, but we understand sometimes it’s easier for people on their way to work.
You can also take donations to our partner, Market at MacVicar at 10th and MacVicar. They have a donate bin for HHHS and are open 10am-4pm Mon-Sat and 12-4pm on Sundays.
What's the difference between human formula and animal formula?
When we get neonatal puppies and kittens in, we use a specialized formula designed for those species (KMR for kittens and Esbilac for puppies). Since they have different nutritional needs than humans, we are not able to use human formula or human feed supplements on animals.
Do you take medical supplies?
Yes and no. We can use sterile rubber gloves, sterile isolation gowns and PPE, cleaning supplies, and sterile gauze. We cannot accept insulin needles, diabetic test strips, dialysis medication, or controlled substances. If you are unsure, please call us at 785-233-7325 and we can consult with our veterinary team. We would hate to waste human-centered items that could have been donated to other great organizations in the area.
Do you take shredded paper for pocket pets?
We used to use shredded paper for our pocket pets but have since learned that the ink and toner printed on the paper, combined with droppings from the animals, may not be safe as the ink dissolves. Now, we almost exclusively use pine shavings or crumbled paper/fiber shredding available at pet stores.
Are there items you don't need or use?
We can’t use pillows or furniture very often. These items are sometimes used in our cat colonies to replicate the feeling of a living room or apartment for cats, but often we end up with more than we can use and not enough storage for them. Please consider a local clothing bank so that our human neighbors can get better use out of them.
What do you do with the cans?
We’re old school and we recycle these for dollars! Every penny and nickle counts!
What do you do with the cardboard boxes, pill bottles, and other recycle-type items?
This is a fun one! We use these for enrichment items. We make single-use treat puzzles, shred toys, and tuna caps for the pets in our care to keep them occupied while they wait for their forever home!
I can't use the pet food I have, can you use it?
We are beyond grateful to be part of the Hill’s Pet Nutrition Food/Shelter/Love Program, our shelter pets actualy eat Hill’s Food.
However, we do maintain a pet food pantry for families in need to help prevent owners having to surrender due to financial hardship, and we put public pet food donations to that program. Your food donation helps us keep the number of pets we recieve down and cares for animals all over our community!

03. Give to the Cats
While we use all of the items on our wish list, if you want to target cat-specific donations in higher demand, those we use on an ongoing basis are:
-clumping cat litter (for foster cats, cats fostered in the administrative offices, etc.)
-pellet litter (for general feline use)
-latex and non-latex gloves (to clean up!)
-kicker toys, cat KONGs (for daily enrichment)
-catnip (for FUN!)
-KMR (kitten milk replacer for tiny kittens)
-Miracle Nipples (feline designed bottles for tiny kittens)
-Stretch and Scratch cat scratchers or cardboard scratchers. Stretch and Scratch pads relieve stress and are easy to install in our cat condos!

04. Give to the Dogs
While we use all of the items listed on our wish list, if you want to target dog-specific donations that we are in higher demand of, here are things we can use on an ongoing basis:
-KONG Wobblers (puzzle feeder for enrichment)
-6 foot slip leads (to walk them)
-waste bags
-laundry soap (to wash their bedding)
-laminating paper (for their kennel info)
-Kuranda beds and Kuranda bed parts. These beds are both comfortable and easy to sanitize to keep our dogs happy and healthy. You can donate Kuranda beds here:

05. Give to the Pocket Pets
We don’t always have pocket pets here with us, but when we do, it seems we have a lot at once! We accept rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, ferrets, mice and rats. Sometimes we get other small creatures in that need special care.
Ways you can help us stock up for these animals, please consider donating:
-Timothy hay
-Pellet food
-Paper bedding
-Pocket Pet enrichment activities (such as cage hanging treats)
-if you aren’t sure what to get, a PetCo, Target, or Walmart gift certificate would be great!
We do accept pocket pet cages and housing units, but since we do have plenty to house the animals that that we get in, these aren’t as urgent as the daily care items.
