Giving Up Your Pet

Owner Surrenders
Helping Hands Humane Society does accept owner surrenders from within Shawnee County, Kansas for families who have nowhere else to turn in the difficult situation of having to give up a pet. We require that you schedule an appointment at least two weeks out so we can provide the best possible care to the hundreds of animals we house. To schedule, please call us at 785-233-7325 and ask to speak to Admissions. Donations are always appreciated.
While we cannot guarantee a positive outcome for any pet entering our shelter, we do promise to do everything we can for them with the resources we have. Our priority is to protect everyone in our community (humans and animals) by adopting out safe and healthy pets.
Self Rehoming
Have you tried privately rehoming your pet? If your pet is safe and healthy, you may have success finding a new home for your pet. Try posting in local Facebook groups created for rehoming, use Adopt a Pet’s rehoming site (https://rehome.adoptapet.com/) for your pet to be listed alongside current adoptable shelter and rescue animals, and network with your friends and family.

To list your pet on this site, visit rehome.adoptapet.com and create a profile. Not only does this site get seen by thousands of potential pet parents in your area, it also allows you to review applications for your pet and set up meetings with potential new families.

Rescue Me!
Rescue Me is a site that can help reach community members within 2 hours of you sharing your pets information. They email adopters in your area based on the breed of your pet and interest on their mailing list.

If you are struggling financially or with your pet’s behavior, we may be able to help you keep your pet! Click the buttons below to learn about our pet food pantry and training scholarships. If you need pet supplies, please email helpinghands@hhhstopeka.org. We’ll help when able. For low cost spay/neuter and vaccines, check out the Community Clinic. This program offers services provided by a licensed veterinarian. If you’re struggling to pay for emergency vet services, check out this list of resources.
