Finding the Perfect Pet Can Be Easy, But There’s Lots to Consider!

Adoption Process

Please be advised that the adoption process can take a minimum of one hour. Out of state adoptions require a $20 health certificate for the adopted pet and typically take at least two days to complete. Adoptions end 30 minutes before the shelter closes everyday. The following steps are necessary for adoption through HHHS:

1. Walk through the kennels to get an idea of which pets you may be interested in visiting. Please do not touch the animals as you walk through the kennels. Disease can be spread very easily with your hands if you touch animal to animal.
2. Keep an open mind! Don’t judge an animal by the way it acts in the kennel. Remember, these animals are in an unfamiliar place that is stressful to them. Some dogs bark simply because they are excited to see you and want attention, but this doesn’t mean they will always bark at home.
3. Before you can visit with any of the animals you have seen, you must fill out an Adoption Profile. Adoption Profiles must be approved by an Adoption Counselor. The profile helps the Adoption Counselor learn more about your lifestyle and needs so they can match you to the right pet. Your profile will be kept on file for 90 days.
4. After your profile has been approved, an Adoption Counselor will bring the animal you have selected into a “Get Acquainted Room” where you can visit with the animal. We ask that you bring your children and other family members to meet with the animal to ensure that it is a good match. Most of our animals come to us as strays and we know little about them or their history. We cannot always be sure on how they will blend with children, other family members, and other animals in your household. We do not want to put anyone in a risky situation at home.
5. Once you have found the right pet for your family, there is paperwork and fees that must be paid to finalize an adoption. All animals adopted from HHHS are sterilized before going to their new home.
6. Lastly, enjoy the new member of the family! They brought us plenty of happiness while they were in our care and we know they will bring you an entire lifetime of joy!

10 reasons to adopt from a shelter
1. You save a life

All animals at our shelter are in need of a second chance. They have been lost, given up or abandoned. They are all unwanted and helpless. You are giving them a new life in a loving home.

2. You help break the cycle of pet overpopulation.

There are not enough homes for all the animals that are born every year. Adopting from a shelter helps weaken the pet overpopulation cycle. Each year 8 to 12 million dogs, cats, puppies and kittens are euthanized because there are simply not enough homes for them.

3. You help stop cruelty in mass breeding facilities

Throughout the country, thousands of commercial pet-breeding facilities and backyard breeders produce millions of animals for sale in pet stores and through newspaper ads. Often known as puppy and kitten mills, these facilities repeatedly impregnate female dogs that spend their entire lives in cages without human companionship. These unfortunate animals are often in intolerable environments, forced to produce litter upon litter, and are destroyed after they become unprofitable assets. Adopting a shelter animal means you don’t support such cruel practices.

4. You take advantage of adopting an adult animal.

Adult pets are great! Often they are already housetrained and some can even “sit” or “stay.” You won’t have to deal with the “puppy phase” or the “kitten phase” which means less of that youthful energy such as biting, chewing, clawing, etc. You will be able to see the personality of the adult animal and won’t have to wait to see what you get.

5. You get a lifetime resource with shelter employees and volunteers

People who work at the shelter will be a great resource to help you find information or resources for your pet. Our staff members work with animals every day and have a wealth of information on many different issues.

6. You choose from a great selection of animals

Our shelter offers a variety that you won’t find anywhere else. We have specific breeds and also the greatest mutts you’ll ever find. We have more than 6,000 animals come through our doors every year!

7. You adopt a pet who has received good care.

All animals that come to the shelter are admitted by experienced staff. They are given vaccinations upon arrival and go through a behavior screening process. (Please ask your Adoption Counselor for details). We have several vet partners that come to our shelter weekly and are there to assist us with health care issues and concerns.

8. You support a valuable charity and community institution

Sadly, every community in America requires an animal shelter. When you adopt a pet from our shelter, you assist a not-for-profit organization, but also send a message to others who will be asking you for years to come where you obtained your adorable pet. Shelters improve the community by mandating that adopted animals be spayed or neutered. This requirement diminishes chances that more unwanted animals will enter the world.

9. You pay less.

Low adoption fees (which cover a portion of our shelter’s costs) are much less than the cost of purebred puppies or kittens sold for profit.

10. You encourage others to adopt animals from shelters

When your friends ask where you got your amazing pet, you can tell them “at the shelter.” Your adoption may encourage others to do the same.

All adopted dogs/puppies must leave in an appropriate dog carrier or on a collar and leash; all adopted cats/kittens must leave in an appropriate cat carrier. Adopted animals will not be allowed to leave the shelter without meeting this condition.

Please note: Individuals who have surrendered a pet or adopted and returned a pet must wait a minimum of two weeks from surrender/return of pet to consider adoption.  After the minimum two weeks is up, a supervisor will review the surrender/return case and determine if the individual will be eligible to adopt.

Adoptable Pets

As we receive approximately 10 – 20 new animals everyday, all the pets that are available for adoption may not be shown yet, and some may no longer be available for adoption. These pictures are updated daily.

HHHS Adoption Fees

The fee assigned to a particular animal does not reflect our view of that animal’s value. Every kitten, cat, puppy, dog or other small mammal is valued equally here. Every pet that comes to our doors deserves—and receives—the same tender care as every other.
