Finder Fostering
Another Way to Help
What is Finder fostering?
This is serving as an unofficial foster by holding on to a lost dog and trying to find their family without bringing them to the shelter.
Is this legal?
Yes – the steps required to make this type of stray hold legal include submitting a found report to HHHS, posting flyers in the neighborhood where the dog was found/posting on social media to try to find the family, and getting it scanned for a microchip.
How do I find the dog's family?
We recommend immediately taking the dog door to door in the neighborhood where it was found to see if anyone knows where they belong. We will also help by scanning for a microchip, checking tags, and comparing the dog against all of the lost reports filed with us.
is it safe?
We encourage you to only Finder Foster a dog if you feel safe and comfortable doing so. Be very cautious doing any introductions with your family, children, and pets. If you can keep the dog safely in your yard with shade, shelter, food, and water, that can be a way to house them safely.
What if I need supplies?
Contact us at HHHS about supplies like dog food, a crate, bowls, etc. We will try our very best to provide what you need to help diver that dog from entering the shelter.
