Working Cats

Why Adopt a Working Cat?

What is the barn cat program?

It is a program that helps us place cats and kittens who would thrive better outside or cats who are harder to place for reasons such as:

  1. Not consistently using a litterbox
  2. Being fearful of people and preferring the company of other cats
  3. Feral and colony cats who were brought to us as stray
  4. Cats who lived primarily outdoors in their previous home
  5. Working cats that would likely be destructive in a home
What are the benefits of a barn cat?

Non toxic pest control! This would be an eco-friendly, organic solution that uses no toxins or chemicals to solve your mouse, rat, mole, and other vermin problems! Not to mention, you’ll also be SAVING LIVES!

What is the adoption fee for a barn cat?

Barn cats are FREE to adopt! All barn cats will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and FELV tested. A one-year Rabies vaccine is also given along with a basic de-wormer and flea/tick preventative.

How do I become a barn cat caregiver?

The first step is to fill out a barn cat adoption application. You can do this in person at the shelter or online on our website (www.hhhstopeka.org). Once you send in an application, our Cat Care Coordinator will contact you when we have barn cats available. All you need to provide is a carrier to bring them home in, some form of shelter (whether it be a barn, shed, shop, garage, etc.), and the ability to provide clean food and water supply.

    A Few Things to Consider:

    Age

We consider cats/kittens from 5 months and older capable of protecting themselves outside.

    Gender:

Is there a specific gender you prefer? All of our cats/kittens are fixed before adoption so introducing new cats to the colony may take less time to acclimate with each other.

    Quarantine/Confinement Area:

We suggest confining the cats to a smaller area for at least a few days to allow them to adjust to their surroundings and understand this is the area that they can come to for food/water and protection.

    Temperament:

Are you wanting feral mousers? Perhaps just a cat that will be okay with living outside? Maybe the kids/grandkids would like to be able to pet and interact with them?

We will do our best to match you with the right cat or cats for your individual needs.
