Microchip Your PetWhat is a microchip?
A microchip is a small chip (about the size of a grain of rice) typically implanted between the shoulder blades of a pet that serves as a permanent form of identification.
How does it work?
A microchip is not a GPS device that can track your pet’s location if they get lost. (GPS collars do exist, however.) Rather, it uses passive radio-frequency to communicate a unique identification number with microchip scanners. Veterinary offices and humane societies carry microchip scanners. We scan every cat and dog who enters our shelter in the hopes we can contact their guardians with help from the microchip company.
How much does it cost?
To get your pet microchipped at HHHS, it costs $20. We will register the microchip for you, and you’ll recieve an email from the microchip company with your login information so you can update any changes in phone number, address, etc. There are no yearly fees. Contact our admissions department or spay/neuter clinic to schedule a microchip appointment.
does my pet still need to wear a collar with tags if they are microchipped?
Yes, it’s still important for your pet to wear physical identification, even if they are microchipped. If a Good Samaritan finds your pet, they may be able to return them to you without having to come to the shelter. If your pet can avoid entering the shelter, that lowers their exposure to unknown germs!
